The Darkness Shall Not Prevail

π. Αυγουστινος Κ

(Το σκοταδι δεν θα επικρατησει)

(†) Bishop Augustinos Kantiotes
Palm Sunday Evening

Tonight, my beloved, Great or Holy Week begins, according to the typicon of our holy Church. Why is it called Great? Its duration is no different from the other weeks of the year. It is called Great because during this week, humanity remembers the thrice-great events of the life of Christ, which occurred on the shell of this earth.

From a Tax-Collector to an Evangelist

π. Αυγουστ. 2000

Bishop Augoustinos of Florina
Holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew

We only have one life, my beloved. A person enters the world and lives on earth once, he can’t come again. And of course, he dies only once – after that, is judgment. The New Testament preaches this great truth (Heb. 9:27) . The other things we hear some people say regarding reincarnation are delusions and deceptions from the devil. The truth is, that after this present life, judgment awaits us, where our deeds will be assessed……

On the Destiny of Man

You will be sons of the Most High (Lk. 6:35)
My beloved, man is one of the biggest dilemmas of this world, and the dilemma exists in the following questions: What is man? Where did he come from? What will become of him? What is his destiny? In vain, philosophy tried throughout the ages to answer these questions. The human spirit roamed in a labyrinth. But today, the Gospel provides the answer. The problem is solved in only a few words. The Lord says, you will be sons of the Most High (Lk. 6:35). These few words are weightier than all the books that the philosophers and sociologists have written about man.

Fr Augustine Kantiotes The meaning of our own personal cross that we all bear.

This video is an extract of a sermon by the late former bishop of Florina fr. Avgoustinos, while he was still an Archimandrite and Preacher of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens. The theme is the meaning of the cross that each of us has to bear in our spiritual struggle. The video is a production of the Holy Monastery of St. Augustine, Florina.

A Double Miracle

Your sins are forgiven... Arise and take up your bed and go to your house (Mt. 9:2,6)
I’ll begin my sermon with a word that expresses all that is grand and noble, all that is exalted and magnificent. And this word is “Christ.”
Oh Christ! He is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end (Rev. 21:6, 22:13). Christ is everything. You should love Him more than your husband, more than your wife, more than your children, more than your mother, more than anything else. And woe if we don’t love Him - we’ll be worthy of reproach. I’d like to believe that here amongst us, there isn’t a single mouth that disrespects Him and blasphemes His name. Those who blaspheme Christ aren’t worthy to be called human.

Childrens’ Spiritual Health

Today, my beloved, we will speak about the Gospel reading (see Mt. 8:5-13). You heard it - it describes one of the Lord’s miracles.
***
Just as Greece’s capital is Athens, Israel’s [former] capital is Jerusalem. During the time of Christ, there was a mansion in one of its neighbourhoods. It belonged to a centurion (Mt. 8:5), which was a rank of the Roman Army that in those days ruled the whole world.

The Fruit of th e Holy Spirit

The fruit of the Spirit is love... (Gal. 5:22)
Yesterday, my beloved, but also today, our holy Church celebrates the feast of Pentecost. This feast has been characterized by important teachers and Fathers, as the birthday of the Church. But while the things of this world have a beginning, a middle and an end, the Church doesn’t have an end. We can say: of His kingdom there will be no end (Lk. 1:33). No matter how much it is warred against, the Church will remain invincible, because the power of the Holy Spirit dwells in it.

A NEW CREATION, A NEW WORLD

Rejoice, thou through whom creation is renewed.
Rejoice, thou through whom the Creator becometh a babe (Akathist Hymn, “A”)

Today, my beloved, our holy Church chants the Akathist Hymn in honour of the all-holy Mother of the Lord. It is an exceptional poem, a phenomenon of the Byzantine era. It’s not only chanted in our small country, it’s also chanted in all the other Orthodox countries: in Serbia, in Bulgaria, in Romania and in the vast Russian land. After the fall of the atheist regime, Russians —our fellow Orthodox Christians— also celebrate today. They even created an “Orthodox bank” — the first of its kind— to accumulate money so as to rebuild the churches that the atheist regime demolished. God has performed magnificent wonders in our times, great and awesome miracles.

Monasticism

Fr. Anthony Alevizopoulos

PhD. of Theology, PhD. of Philosophy

Monasticism

In our times many people and especially young people desire to see their ideas and the content of their faith embodied. To have people who live their faith and the hope in Christ with all its consequences is a great contribution to our society which, today, has an horizontal orientation. A contemporary Orthodox hierarch, referring to the three monastic vows of celibacy, poverty and obedience, quite aptly points out: “the evangelical exhortations of purity dedicated to God, poverty and obedience are based upon the word and example of our Lord and are recommended by the Apostles and the Fathers, as well as by the teachers and pastors of the Church, and are a divine gift which the Church received from the Lord, and which she preserves through His Grace”.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ORTHODOX CHURCH AND ROMAN CATHOLICISM

«Πνευματική φαρέτρα τοῦ Ὀρθοδόξου Χριστιανοῦ»

DIFFERENCES

BETWEEN THE ORTHODOX CHURCH AND ROMAN CATHOLICISM

THE GREAT SCHISM

Christianity was identical in the East and West until the IX c. A.D. The Christian faith, confessed and explained by the Seven Ecumenical Councils (Synods), was the same without any deviation on both sides. In other words Occidental Europe was Orthodox till the end of the VIII c. as the Bishops of the West and the Bishops of the East had participated at the Seven Ecumenical Councils on the same level and no one among them had pretended to a superiority or primacy. The Christian West had agreed to all the decisions of the Seven Ecumenical Councils. It was only from the early IX c. that the West began to introduce innovations concerning dogmatic and ecclesiological principles.

WHAT IS HERESY? Metropolitan Augustinos (Kantiotis)

Heresy is poisonous food for the soul; it is like fake medicine, which does not cure but rather causes harm; or a counterfeit coin that appears to be a precious gold doubloon, but lacks its value. It is a perversion of Sacred Tradition; it is a distortion of the true and perfect faith; it is a deviation from the straight path traced out for us by the Word of God. Heresy is the acceptance of religious ideas condemned by the Church as false and contrary to its right faith. Heresy is a real crime that undermines the authority and influence of our Church, founded by Christ Himself as the pillar and ground of the truth.
